Kamala Devi Harris, born October 20, 1964, is an American politician and attorney who is the 49th and current vice president of the United States.
A Trailblazing Politician
Born in Oakland, California, Harris is the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants. She attended Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. After working as a prosecutor, she entered politics in 2003 when she was elected District Attorney of San Francisco.
In 2010, Harris became California's first woman and the first Black person to be elected Attorney General. She served in that role until 2017, when she was elected to the U.S. Senate. In 2020, she made history again by becoming the first woman, the first Black woman, and the first Asian American woman to be elected vice president of the United States.
A Personal Journey
In her new book, "The Truths We Hold: An American Journey," Harris shares her personal story of growing up in a multicultural household, her experiences as a Black woman in America, and her journey to the White House.
"This book is a reflection on my life and a call to action for all of us to come together and fight for the values we share," Harris said in a statement. "It's a book about the truths we hold dear as Americans, and the truths that are still waiting to be realized."
