2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony Controversy

Apologies Issued for Offensive Tableau

Organizers Express Regret for Hurt Caused

Organizers of the 2024 Paris Olympics have apologized to Catholics and other Christian groups offended by a tableau that evoked Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper" during the opening ceremony.

The tableau, which featured drag queens, sparked anger and criticism from members of the religious communities who viewed it as disrespectful and offensive.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the organizing committee expressed regret for any hurt caused.

"We deeply apologize to anyone who was offended by the tableau," the statement read. "It was not our intention to cause any harm. We regret any hurt or discomfort this may have caused and we assure you that we will take appropriate steps to ensure that such an incident does not happen again."

The opening ceremony was filled with memorable moments, including the lighting of the cauldron and a performance by Céline Dion. However, the controversy surrounding the tableau has overshadowed some of the positive aspects of the event.

The 2024 Paris Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
